On January 15, 2022, the US Government made additional over-the-counter testing opportunities available for individuals who want home tests for COVID-19.
Two vehicles are being used for this roll out – some insurers are now required to cover the cost of test kits (up to 8 tests every 30 days, per person), and the government is also providing a website to facilitate the delivery of free test kits through US Mail.
US Government Test Kits
The government has provided a website where up to four tests per household can be ordered at www.covidtests.gov. These tests will be delivered by the US Post office.
Accessing at-home tests through Insurance
Each health insurance plan has different options for accessing test kits.
Medicare Plans
At this time, Medicare and CTPF Medicare plans do not offer free over-the-counter tests. Physician ordered tests done in a lab continue to be covered.
Non-Medicare Plans
Non-Medicare plans are covering at-home tests as of January 15, 2022. Plans cover up to 8 tests (4 boxes for a two-package box) per month per person.
Blue Cross Blue Shield (PPO and HMO): BCBS has established a website with plan-specific information COVID-19 member info.
United Healthcare PPO: UHC has a special page available on www.myuhc.com with plan-specific information for members.
